R & I just found the greatest Mexican restaurant in San Francisco! Located on Valencia St, conveniently next to our favorite martini bar, Blondie’s, Puerto Alegre is the best so far. Mexican food and martinis, perfect Sunday right?
The complimentary chips and salsa were addictive. The salsas were tangy, spicy and flavorful.
We started with the combo platter including four excellent super cheesy quesadillas, four extremely tender & juicy wings (not Mexican exactly, but delicious nonetheless) and four chimichangas. The chimichangas were a little too oily for my taste, one was more than enough for me.
To accompany our meal R had a very refreshing Corona Light and I initially ordered a mango margarita. I thought I’d try something new, sinceI usually only order strawberry or lime when it comes to margaritas. The margarita was low on alcohol and heavy mango was. The mango juice was overwhelming, too thick and far too pulpy for a cocktail. I ended up ordering a Corona Light as I really didn’t like my drink. I have to mention that the waitress was extremely nice to us and didn’t charge us for the Margherita (we didn’t drink more than a sip).
As we were having the last bites of our appetizers, we could hear the sizzle of our fajitas making their way through the crowded restaurant. The shrimp & steak fajita was the star of our meal. We filled our corn tortillas with fajitas, sour cream, salsa, beans and the tastiest guacamole ever! Dear God, that was no ordinary guacamole, there is nothing really different about the taste, but it is just perfectly made.
After lunch, we hopped to Blondie’s Bar, which is literally next door. Blondie’s Bar specializes in Martinis. Mixed by a great bartender, each drink is guaranteed to be a good one. From chocolate martini, to lemon limes, to dirty martinis they have it all. More than twenty different blends to choose from. They even have, what I call the lunch martini, which is basically a martini with every garnish garnish there is (over 10). You should only order it on an empty stomach… There’s enough food in it to feed two people!
It is not our first time at Blondie’s, and each time we try something new. I got the “Lobo” and R got the “Sidecar “. Citrusy and fresh we sipped our drink on the patio bar overlooking Valencia street. A perfect spot for sight seeing and watching the passers by. And let me tell, San francisco-ers won’t let you down with their over -the-top, weird and unusual styles.
